Paint Color - Quick Decisions

To be honest, color can be a bit intimidating. I don't want to overwhelm you in my very first inspiration post, but choosing the right color or placing it in the correct spot is challenging. I've read numerous articles on this, and many recommend using the color wheel, doing research, and creating a mood board. However, when time puts you on the spot, there's no time for any of those. Over the past few years of designing, I've found a few tips that are incredibly helpful when quick decisions need to be made.

60 -30 -10 Rule

Consider applying the 60-30-10 rule, a helpful guideline for making quick decisions in color choices. Allocate 60% for the main color, which encompasses large items and walls such as sofas, tables, and rugs. Reserve 30% for the secondary color, seen in linens, curtains, and cushions, providing support to the overall space. The remaining 10% is designated for accent shades, offering a vibrant touch that complements the main and secondary colors. Incorporating art or plants is an excellent way to achieve this. While this concept can be applied to any room in the house, focus on prioritizing areas frequented by guests to create a lasting "Wow" factor.

60% Whites ( Wall, sofa, rug)

30% Brown ( Hardwood Floor, Furniture, lounge chairs even leather)

10% Pop of color (Plants, artwork, area rugs)

Monochromatic

While some may believe that monochromatic designs are losing popularity, I still see them as a fantastic option. Utilizing different shades of the same color can create an elegant environment. Introducing various textures and materials helps prevent the room from feeling empty and contributes to a minimalist vibe. However, not all color schemes align with this concept. It's essential to steer clear of pairing bright or vibrant tones with dark or dull colors. Instead, focus on finding colors that harmonize well together. Keep a few shades up your sleeves so that when the need arises, you'll know exactly which one to use.

Blue is an inherently elegant color that effortlessly complements any room. Consider pairing darker shades for a sophisticated base and balancing them with a touch of lighter blue. To achieve a monochromatic look, incorporating diverse materials is key. Enhance the elegance with elements like metals, layered rugs, and even velvet, as these additions can significantly elevate the overall impact of the color scheme.

Shades of Yellow

Yellow is undeniably the happiest color, but it requires careful handling to avoid appearing dated. To strike the right balance, consider pairing yellow with a neutral color or a warm brown tone. Alternatively, a trendy and minimalistic color scheme involves barely yellow paired with soft or pale wood furnishings, creating a simple yet stylish aesthetic.

Shades of Gray

Gray is a timeless choice that seems to effortlessly suit every room in the house, earning its title as the "King of Monochromatic." Lighter shades can evoke a natural feel, while darker tones bring a bold touch to the conversation. Regardless of the specific shade, gray has a unique ability to balance itself, making it a versatile and foolproof option for creating a cohesive and stylish aesthetic.

In conclusion, identifying the desired style is crucial—whether it's modern or traditional—and determining the atmosphere, be it clean and spacious, deep and moody, or bright and breezy. Your choice of paint plays a pivotal role in crafting both style and ambiance. For a traditional look, consider period colors in slightly greyed tones, while a modern aesthetic might lean towards whites and greys with sharp accents.
